Midsole foam loses its resilience with use, and it does so well before the outsole looks worn out. The usual sign is that shoes which used to feel fine start leaving your legs sore. Rotating two pairs lets foam recover between runs and generally extends the life of both.
Heel hold matters as much as toe room. If your heel lifts as you push off, the shoe is either too large or the wrong shape for your foot, and lacing adjustments will only partly compensate. A secure heel with a relaxed forefoot is what you are aiming for.
