Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between women's and men's running shoes?

Some models are built on a different last, typically with a narrower heel and different forefoot volume, rather than just being smaller. Others are the same shoe offered across a wider size run. Where a model comes in both, choose by how it fits rather than by the label on it.

How much cushioning do I need?

More cushioning helps over longer distances and on hard surfaces; less gives more ground feel and a firmer push-off for shorter, faster running. The most important factor is what your legs are already adapted to. Changing stack height sharply, in either direction, is a common cause of new soreness.

Are trail shoes worth it if I only occasionally run off-road?

For firm gravel paths and fire trails, a road shoe usually copes. For loose, wet, rocky or steep ground, the grip and underfoot protection of a trail shoe make a real difference, and road outsoles slide on wet rock. If off-road is occasional but genuinely rough, a trail shoe is worth having.

Choosing women's running shoes

Match the shoe to the running you do

Road shoes are built for repetitive, predictable impact on hard surfaces and prioritise cushioning and a smooth roll through the stride. Trail shoes add grip, underfoot protection and a more secure upper for uneven ground. Gym and training shoes sit lower and firmer, because a soft, tall midsole is unstable under weights. Decide which of the three you actually spend most time doing before comparing models.

Cushioning: how much, and why

Maximum-cushion shoes absorb more impact over long distances and on hard surfaces, which suits higher mileage and easy days. Lower-stack shoes give more ground feel and a firmer push-off, which many runners prefer for faster or shorter sessions. The right amount is the amount your legs are adapted to; changing it abruptly is a common cause of new aches.

Fit

Women's-specific models

Some models are built on a last shaped for a narrower heel and a different forefoot volume rather than simply being a smaller version of the men's shoe. Others are the same shoe in different sizes and colourways. The product page states which sizes are available; where a model is offered in both, fit rather than the label should decide.
