Questions
Frequently asked questions
What do pre-school and grade school mean in kids' shoe sizes?
They are manufacturer size bands based on foot size rather than a child's age: roughly infant, then pre-school, then grade school. The same model is often made in more than one band, and the construction differs between them rather than just the size. Our product titles state the band so the versions are not mixed up.
Are kids' shoe sizes the same across brands?
No. The US, UK and EU numbers come from each manufacturer and are not directly comparable. A child can take different nominal sizes in two brands, or even in two ranges from the same brand. Measure the foot and check it against the specific model's size run rather than assuming last year's number carries over.
What shoes does my child need for school sport?
For general PE and running, a sports or running shoe. For indoor court sport, a court or basketball shoe with a non-marking sole, which many school halls require. Everyday canvas and casual shoes are not designed for repeated running or lateral movement and wear through quickly when used that way.
Kids' shoes, by what they are for
Where to start
Sort by use before brand or colour: running and sports shoes for PE and training, basketball shoes for court play, and casual and canvas and skate shoes for everyday wear. A shoe designed for one job tends to be mediocre at the others, and children are hard on shoes generally.
Age bands and what they mean
Manufacturers split kids' footwear into bands that correspond to foot size rather than to a child's age: infant, pre-school, and grade school. The same model often appears in several bands, and the construction differs between them, not just the size. Our product titles state which band a pair belongs to, so a grade-school and a pre-school version of the same shoe are not confused for one another.
Fitting, briefly
- Check every couple of months; growth comes in bursts.
- Leave roughly a thumb's width at the toe, with the child standing.
- Fit with the socks they will wear, which is not always the thin ones.
- Watch the width as well as the length, particularly on a child with a broader foot.
Sizing across brands
The US, UK and EU figures shown on each page come from the manufacturer, and they are not interchangeable between brands. A child who takes one size in one brand may take a different one in another. Where you are buying without trying, measure the foot and compare against that model's own size run.
