Backpacks

Anti-theft daypacks, laptop backpacks, a wheeled trolley backpack and a 28L carry-on travel pack.

Eight backpacks covering day trips through to carry-on only travel. The Drift Daypack, Voyager Backpack and Voyager Anti Theft Backpack add slash-resistant panels, lockable compartments and RFID pockets, and the Voyager Anti Theft model has a dual USB port so you can charge from a power bank inside.

For longer trips, the Road Warrior Backpack opens flat like a suitcase and grows from 28 to 36 litres. The Commuter Trolley Backpack switches to two inline wheels, and the Trinity and Bukbagz convert into crossbody or messenger bags. The Commuter Laptop Backpack suits daily work carry with a padded 15 inch section.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a backpack be used as carry-on luggage?

Yes, provided it meets the size limit. The Road Warrior Backpack at 47 x 32 x 20cm sits comfortably inside the 56 x 36 x 23cm box Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin publish, even though it expands from 28L to 36L. The Commuter Trolley Backpack at 55 x 36 x 24cm is 1cm over on depth. Airlines measure the bag as presented, so an overstuffed pack can fail a size it would otherwise pass.

What size laptop will fit?

The Road Warrior Backpack, Commuter Laptop Backpack and Commuter Trolley Backpack all take laptops up to 17 inches. The 3 in 1 Convertible Backpack and Bukbagz take up to 15 inches, and the Billy Laptop Messenger up to 13. Measure your laptop, particularly if it lives in a protective case, because the published figure refers to the compartment rather than the brand's screen size.

Which backpack is best for daily commuting?

The Commuter Laptop Backpack at 18.9L and 1.03kg is the straightforward choice: light, built around a 17-inch laptop compartment, and no bigger than a working day needs. If your commute involves long walks or a station transfer, the Commuter Trolley Backpack lets you roll it instead, at the cost of 1.4kg of extra empty weight.

Travel and commuter backpacks

Three jobs, three shapes

Backpacks in this range fall into three groups, and buying the wrong group is the usual mistake.

Opening flat versus top loading

A top-loading pack means digging to the bottom for anything packed first. The Road Warrior and the 3 in 1 Convertible Backpack unzip around the edge and open like a suitcase, so the whole contents are visible at once. For a trip rather than a commute, that difference is worth more than an extra litre of capacity.

Laptop sizing is not a formality

Published laptop sizes refer to the padded compartment, and a 16-inch laptop in a chunky case can fail to fit a sleeve rated for 16 inches. The Road Warrior, Commuter Laptop Backpack and Commuter Trolley Backpack take up to 17 inches; the Trinity and Bukbagz take up to 15. Measure your machine rather than trusting its marketing size.

Wheels, when you stop wanting to carry it

The Commuter Trolley Backpack converts between a wheeled bag and a backpack, with a cover for the wheels so they do not press into your back. At 2.45kg empty it is heavier than the packs without wheels, which is the price of having the option.
