A shoe that feels soft in the shop is not the same as a shoe that is comfortable at six in the evening. What matters over a long day is being held without pressure points: no heel slip, no compression across the widest part of the foot, about a thumb's width at the toe. Very soft, unstructured shoes often feel best in the first hour and worst by the end.
Judge width before length. If the upper bulges over the sole or the sides of your foot feel pressed, the shoe is cut too narrow for you, and a longer size adds room at the toe rather than across the foot where the problem actually is.
