A shoe that feels soft in the shop is not the same as a shoe that is comfortable at six in the evening. What matters over a long day is being held without pressure points: no heel slip, no compression across the widest part of the foot, about a thumb's width at the toe. Very soft, unstructured shoes often feel best in the first hour and worst by the end.
Canvas is light and breathable but slow to dry and better suited to dry weather, and it creases rather than scuffs. Leather and leather-look uppers hold their shape, clean up more easily and cope better with rain, at the cost of breathability. Knit and synthetic uppers are lightest and usually the first to show wear at the flex points.
