Indoor or outdoor decides the outsole, and it is the choice most often skipped. Court shoes built for polished timber use a softer rubber with a fine herringbone pattern, which grips indoors and wears down quickly on concrete. If you play mainly outdoors, look for a harder, thicker outsole and expect an indoor-only shoe to lose its bite within a season.
If you play on outdoor courts through summer, check the outsole for smooth patches at the pivot points under the ball of the foot. That is where traction goes first, and it goes quietly: most players notice it as slipping rather than as wear.
