Treat new shoes before you wear them rather than after they are marked. Protective sprays work by making the surface harder to stain in the first place; they do very little for dirt that has already worked into a material.
Brush loose dirt off before applying anything wet. Cleaning wet over dry grit grinds it into the material, which is how a cleaning session leaves a shoe looking worse than when it started.
