Canvas is light and breathable but slow to dry and better suited to dry weather, and it creases rather than scuffs. Leather and leather-look uppers hold their shape, clean up more easily and cope better with rain, at the cost of breathability. Knit and synthetic uppers are lightest and usually the first to show wear at the flex points.
Rotating two pairs does more for how long shoes last than any cleaning product. Each pair gets to dry out fully between wears, which is what prevents the breakdown of linings and adhesives that shortens the life of a shoe worn every single day.
