Inseam length changes the garment more than the size does. A short inseam moves freely and suits training; a longer one sits closer to the knee and reads as more casual. Both can be labelled the same size.
Check whether there is a liner. Shorts with a built-in brief are meant to be worn without additional layers, and shorts without one are not, which is easy to discover at an inconvenient moment.
