Carry-on size and weight limits for Australian airlines

Cabin baggage rules in Australia are less uniform than most travellers assume. The same suitcase can be waved through on a Qantas jet, weighed at a Jetstar gate and turned away at the steps of a regional turboprop. This guide sets out what each major Australian airline publishes, what changes on 2 February 2027, and how to measure a bag so you find out at home rather than at the gate.

Every figure below was checked against each airline's own website on 20 September 2026. Airlines change these rules, so confirm with your airline before you fly.

Three things the table hides

Qantas domestic is more generous than its reputation

The figure most often repeated online is 7kg, and for Qantas international Economy that is correct. On domestic jet services, though, Qantas publishes an allowance of three items totalling 14kg, with no single item over 10kg. If you have been leaving things behind on domestic flights to stay under 7kg, you have been packing to the wrong number.

The aircraft matters more than the airline

On QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 services the allowance drops to 7kg, and Qantas notes that small wheelie bags do not fit in the overhead lockers on these aircraft: they are collected at boarding and returned to you on arrival. Rex's entire regional network runs on SAAB 340 turboprops with a 7kg limit and compact lockers. A route that looks domestic on the booking page can be a turboprob at the gate, so check the aircraft type, not just the airline.

Jetstar is moving from weight to size

For travel from 2 February 2027 on Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights, the 7kg limit disappears. Instead, every booking includes one underseat bag of up to 40 x 30 x 20cm, and an overhead bag of up to 56 x 36 x 23cm comes as an upgrade or with selected Economy bundles. No single bag may weigh more than 10kg. Travel before that date, and flights operated by Jetstar Japan (GK), are unchanged. If you are booking now for travel next year, check which side of that date you fall on.

What actually gets measured

Airlines measure the bag as it is presented at the gate. Qantas states plainly that carry-on size is calculated including wheels and packed-away handles. That matters, because manufacturers often quote an internal or shell-only figure that is several centimetres smaller than the whole object you are wheeling.

Two practical consequences:

Personal item, underseat bag, or both

These are not interchangeable terms. A personal item is the small thing that goes under the seat in front: a handbag, a slim laptop sleeve, a book. An underseat bag, in the Qantas sense, is a larger defined size of its own (34 x 48 x 23cm) that sits alongside your personal item. Virgin Australia publishes a single personal item size of 45 x 33 x 20cm. Jetstar's new rules make the underseat bag the item everyone gets by default.

The practical reading: on Qantas domestic you may genuinely carry three things; on Virgin you may carry two; on Jetstar from February 2027 you carry one unless you pay for the second.

Which of our bags meet the 56 x 36 x 23cm limit

Below are the external dimensions the manufacturer publishes for the cabin-sized bags we stock, measured against the 56 x 36 x 23cm box used by Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia. We have included the ones that do not fit, because you are better off knowing now than at the gate.

Bag External size Empty weight Capacity Against 56 x 36 x 23cm
Glide Lite Carry-On 54.5 x 34.5 x 20.5cm 2.0kg 32L Inside the limit on all three sides
Glide Elite Carry-On Pro 56 x 35.5 x 23cm 3.2kg 35L Exactly on the limit; no margin
Road Warrior Backpack 47 x 32 x 20cm 1.48kg 28L, expands to 36L Inside the limit unexpanded
Weekender Travel Bag 28 x 47 x 17cm 1.0kg 22L Inside the limit
Commuter Laptop Backpack 45 x 30 x 14cm 1.03kg 18.9L Inside the limit
Packable Duffle 44 x 33 x 20cm 0.35kg 29L Inside the limit
Glide Carry-On Pro 52 x 38 x 23cm 3.4kg 36L 2cm over on width
Metro Carry-On Duffle 50 x 35 x 24cm 2.8kg 36L 1cm over on depth
Commuter Trolley Backpack 55 x 36 x 24cm 2.45kg 27L 1cm over on depth

Three points on reading that table honestly. A soft bag that is a centimetre over will often compress into a sizer where a hard case of the same measurement will not, but that is the gate agent's judgement on the day, not a rule you can rely on. A case listed as exactly 56 x 36 x 23cm has no tolerance for a bulging front pocket. And the empty weight column matters on any 7kg flight: the Glide Elite Carry-On Pro uses 3.2kg of a 7kg international Economy allowance before you pack a shirt.

If a strict limit is your main concern, the Glide Lite Carry-On has the most margin of the wheeled cases at 54.5 x 34.5 x 20.5cm and 2.0kg. Browse the rest of the carry-on range, or read how to choose carry-on luggage for the differences beyond size.

Frequently asked questions

Does the carry-on size limit include the wheels?

Yes. Qantas states that carry-on size is measured by a bag's height, width and depth including wheels and packed-away handles. Treat every published limit that way, and measure the whole object rather than the shell.

Is Qantas carry-on 7kg or 14kg?

Both, depending on the flight. Domestic Economy and Business on jet aircraft is 14kg across three items, with a maximum of 10kg for any one item. International Economy is 7kg, and QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 services are 7kg. International First, Business and Premium Economy return to 14kg.

What happens if my bag is over the limit at the gate?

It gets checked in, and fees may apply. Rex warns that carry-on offloaded at the boarding gate is treated as checked baggage and may travel on the next available flight rather than yours, which is worth knowing if your bag holds anything you need on arrival. Keep medication, documents, valuables and lithium batteries on your person, not in a bag that might be taken from you.

Can I take a power bank in my carry-on?

Spare lithium batteries and power banks belong in the cabin, never in checked baggage. Qantas limits passengers to two power banks and states they cannot be used or charged on board. Check your airline's current rule before you fly, as several carriers have tightened these recently.

Do the rules change for international flights from Australia?

Yes, and not only by cabin. Qantas applies a separate rule to all flights departing India: one overhead bag only, 7kg in Economy and 10kg in Business, with no additional personal item. Route-specific exceptions like this are easy to miss because they sit below the headline allowance.
