Cotton tees shrink slightly on their first hot wash, and the shrinkage is mostly in length. Washing cold and drying flat or on a line keeps the shape you bought for longer than a tumble dryer will.
A tee worn under a jacket and a tee worn on its own want different fits. If it is a layering piece, a closer cut sits better under something else; if it is the outer layer, a relaxed cut is more forgiving.
