Clean off salt, sand and grit before it works into the material rather than after. Most everyday shoes fail at the creases and the join between upper and sole, and abrasive dirt sitting in those places is what accelerates it.
A shoe that feels soft in the shop is not the same as a shoe that is comfortable at six in the evening. What matters over a long day is being held without pressure points: no heel slip, no compression across the widest part of the foot, about a thumb's width at the toe. Very soft, unstructured shoes often feel best in the first hour and worst by the end.
