Treat new shoes before you wear them rather than after they are marked. Protective sprays work by making the surface harder to stain in the first place; they do very little for dirt that has already worked into a material.
Test any cleaner or protector on a small hidden area first, particularly on suede, nubuck and pale leather, where a product can darken a material permanently.
