Cushioning is a preference rather than a ranking. A taller, softer midsole absorbs more impact over long distances and suits easy days and higher mileage. A lower, firmer shoe gives more ground feel and a more direct push-off, which many runners prefer for shorter and faster sessions. The right amount is close to what your legs are already used to; changing it sharply is a common cause of new aches.

Feet lengthen under load and swell as you run, so a pair that fits perfectly standing still in the morning can bruise toenails on a long descent.
