Match the shoe to the surface you actually run on. Road and treadmill running is repetitive impact in a straight line, and rewards cushioning and a smooth roll from heel to toe. Trail running asks for grip and a more secure upper to hold the foot on uneven ground. A road outsole slides on wet rock, and a trail outsole feels stiff and noisy on a footpath.
Leave about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Feet lengthen under load and swell as you run, so a pair that fits perfectly standing still in the morning can bruise toenails on a long descent. Fitting late in the day, in the socks you actually run in, gets you closer to running conditions.
