Heel hold matters as much as toe room. If your heel lifts as you push off, the shoe is either too large or the wrong shape for your foot, and lacing adjustments will only partly compensate. A secure heel with a relaxed forefoot is what you are aiming for.
Air-dry running shoes away from direct heat. Radiators, car heaters and direct sun stiffen adhesives and distort foam, which shortens the life of a shoe faster than the running does. Removing the insoles helps them dry through properly after a wet run.
