Stud pattern is matched to a surface. Firm ground studs are designed for natural grass, and using them on an artificial pitch wears them down quickly while giving less grip than a surface-appropriate sole would.
Football boots are fitted closer than everyday shoes, because a foot moving inside a boot costs touch and causes blisters. Closer, though, is not the same as painful: you still want your longest toe just short of the end.
