Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a power bank on a plane in Australia?
Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in the cabin, never in checked baggage. Airlines apply their own limits on top of that: Qantas, for example, restricts passengers to two power banks and states they cannot be used or charged during the flight. Several carriers have tightened these rules recently, so check yours before you fly.
Are compression socks worth wearing on a long flight?
Many travellers wear graduated compression socks on long flights, where sitting still for hours makes the legs uncomfortable. They are a comfort measure rather than a medical device, and we are a retailer rather than a medical adviser: if you have a circulatory condition or a history of clots, ask your doctor rather than taking buying advice from a shop.
Why pack a foldable bag?
Because the trip home is rarely the same size as the trip out. A packable duffle at 29L weighs 348g and folds into its own pocket, so it costs almost nothing to carry until the moment you need a second bag. It is also useful as a beach or market bag that does not have to be unpacked from your main luggage.
The things that make a trip easier
Comfort on the flight
Cabins run cold and long flights are uncomfortable in predictable ways. A memory foam neck pillow holds its shape through a long flight rather than flattening out like an inflatable one. A packable travel blanket with its own pouch clips to a bag, so it actually travels with you. A sleep mask blocks cabin and hotel light. Compression socks are worn by many travellers on long flights where getting up and moving is difficult.
Power
The 65W GaN charger and plug converter replaces a bag of separate chargers and adapters with one unit that handles a phone, tablet and laptop. Note the rule that catches people out: power banks and spare lithium batteries must travel in the cabin, never in checked luggage, and several airlines now limit how many you may carry and whether you may use them in flight.
The bag you did not plan to need
A packable duffle at 29L and 348g, or a packable tote at 26L, folds into its own pocket and weighs almost nothing in a case. It exists for the return journey, when what you bought does not fit in what you brought.
Small things that prevent large problems
A luggage scale tells you at home what an airline will tell you at the desk for a fee. A luggage tag with a covered ID window identifies a bag without displaying your address. A TSA cable lock secures zip pullers in a way US security can open without cutting.
